Head Chef Richard Ptacnik to cook at Canberra’s Mezzalira Ristorante
Canberra’s premium restaurants Italian & Sons and Mezzalira will welcome a line-up of top Italian chefs to host a guest series, beginning in May. The series, Due Mani (‘Two Hands’) will see respected Italian chefs Matteo Zamboni (Zambo, Sydney), Richard Ptacnik (OTTO, Sydney) and Andreas Papadakis & Alberto Fava (Tipo 00, Melbourne) collaborate with the two popular Canberra restaurants to create a series of one-off menus, each with an individual take on classic Italian cuisine.
Both restaurants are owned by the Trimboli family, who has led the charge in the nation’s capital dining scene for nearly 30 years. Their restaurant group now comprises award-winning trattoria Italian & Sons complete with adjoining wine bar, Bacaro on Lonsdale Street in Braddon, the refined modern-Italian Mezzalira Ristorante, located on London Circuit in the CBD and the neighbouring pizzicheria, Da Rosario.
Owner Pasquale Trimboli saw the opportunity to celebrate Canberra’s flourishing dining scene by inviting some of the country’s most innovative Italian chefs to the capital. “Australia has a unique heritage when it comes to Italian cooking, and it’s incredible to see an impressive crop of young chefs, each with their own take on traditions,” said Trimboli. “I look forward to opening both our restaurants, and our city to them. ‘Due mani’ literally means ‘two hands’ in Italian, and in this instance it’s a fitting description for our new series, a pair of hands working together in the kitchen.”
From Sydney’s harbourside OTTO Ristorante, executive chef Richard Ptacnik will take on the Mezzalira kitchen on Monday 10th July. He will join forces with Italian-born head chef Federico Ferrari, whose sophisticated Italian fare has gained accolades from Canberra locals and visitors alike. OTTO’s Ptacnik will bring his trademark produce-led touch and refreshingly simple approach to the bespoke menu. Ptacnik earned his stripes working with some of Europe’s great chefs in Berlin, Switzerland and his native Prague before trading in the cold for a dose of Sydney sun, earning OTTO a coveted chef’s hat in 2015.
